A radiant, luminous Juliette Binoche stars in this sinuous and bittersweet romantic comedy set in Paris. Loosely inspired by Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse, Claire Denis teams up with writer Christine Angot to tell, in fragments, the romantic journey of Isabelle (Juliette Binoche), a sensitive, middle-aged, unhappily divorced artist and mother, as she moves from one lover to the next in search of definitive love, a saga of elusive happiness.
A wonderful atmospheric gem, with its use of music and exquisitely lit by Denis’ long-standing cinematographer Agnès Godard, and a constellation of star actors (Gérard Depardieu, Xavier Beauvois, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Bruno Podalydès …), Isabelle’s quest for love unfolds with a delightful and uplifting finalé.
