Sequel to Bullhead (2011) and the second in a trilogy, Racer and the Jailbird is loosely based on a particular moment in Belgian criminal history, mixing adrenaline-fuelled accounts of notorious gangs with the world of motor racing. Love is at the centre of this, a couple thwarted by circumstance and the blows that fate deals them.
Roskam describes it as ‘a fictional tale of love and crime, desire and failure… an Amour Noir’. When Gino/Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts) who works in the motor ‘import-export’ business meets racing driver Bibi/ Bénédicte (Adèle Exarchopoulos), there is instant chemistry between them. The film is a torrent of emotions, their love story orbiting terrific action set-pieces and glamourous cinematic moments, but always amidst a tangible grim reality.
