Anne Fontaine’s (The Innocents, Coco Before Chanel) affecting new drama tells the journey of Marvin/Martin marvellously portrayed by Finnegan Oldfield.
Flashbacks are used to ingenious effect, fluidly interweaving the different eras of Marvin’s life, gradually allowing the truth to emerge. Martin Clément, born Marvin Bijou, has escaped his small countryside village, and with it his father’s tyranny, his mother’s resignation, and the intolerance and bullying he suffered from being singled out as ‘different’. Against all odds, he has found allies. First, Madeleine Clément (Catherine Mouchet), the middle school principal who introduced him to theatre and inspires him to break free. Then, Abel Pinto (Vincent Macaigne), his mentor and role model will encourage him to tell his story on stage. And finally, Isabelle Huppert will help him bring his story to the world.
Reinventing Marvin screened at the Venice International Film Festival where it won the Queer Lion. The character of Marvin was inspired by young writer Edouard Louis’s bestselling autobiographical novel, widely translated and available in English as The End of Eddy.
