War reporter Jacques Mayanno (Vincent Lindon-The Measure of a Man; Welcome) returns to France from the Middle East, dazed and deaf in one ear.

His photographer and best friend has died there. At an exhibition they speak of his quest to ‘bring back proof. Images of the injustice, the violence of the madness of men.’ Jacques accepts a mission from the Vatican to lead a canonical investigation into a young woman, Anna (Galatea Bellugi), and her alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in South-East France. Meanwhile pilgrims are arriving daily to touch her, and to hear her speak. The commission must decide the validity of Anna’s claims. But does the diocese or the pilgrims or the shopkeepers want to know the truth or maintain the mystery?

Like Giannoli’s previous films (In the Beginning; Marguerite; The Singer) his characters want to believe, to find themselves in mystery and illusion. Jacques’s search for truth leads him back to the Middle East, just where his friend had died.

As a reporter Jacques seeks factual proof, but he finds himself in a world where proof and images don’t function: that of faith and forgiveness.
