THE RED CIRCLE
- Le Cercle Rouge

Beginning with the spectacular escape of Vogel (Gian Maria Volonté), super-thief Corey (Alain Delon) also fresh out of prison, aids his escape. Brought together by fate, they plot an ambitious heist, but to pull it off they need a sharpshooter – alcoholic ex-cop Jansen (Yves Montand). All the elements of a classic American crime film are present but seen through a uniquely French prism.

The Red Circle is Melville last commercial success and stars two of the top French stars of the time, Alain Delon and Yves Montand.

A dark powerful, existential thriller about honour, fate and fortune, it is more abstract and desolate than his earlier work, with mood and style prioritised over plot, the film is celebrated for its climactic heist sequence of half-hour duration, completely devoid of dialogue.
